Update 19.07.22
Tue 19 Jul 2022Dear parent / carer,
I hope that you are surviving this crazy heat – we are doing our best to keep the buildings, children and staff from overheating, but we are flagging a bit! Roll on some fresher weather (tomorrow I believe).
A few points to note:
- Universal free meals for all Rec, Year 1 and 2 pupils (in September). You can sign up and pick and choose on a day by day basis. If you are interested, please register using the following link:
- Dates for next year – amended to include a year 2 performance – attached. We break up this Friday (3:15p.m – normal time) and the children are back on Tue 6th September. There has been talk of a 6th teacher training day in The Press and we have just been informed that this may well be the case, but it won’t be confirmed until January 2023. I’ll keep you posted but I think it’s very likely that there will be confirmation at this time (the minister seems committed to it). As such, you may wish to pencil in Friday 23rd June 2023 in for a long weekend as this will be the date, should it happen!
- Staffing – there will be quite a move around in September. Mr Lowe has secured an assistant head job in Kymin View / Llandogo (Monmouth), Miss Brown a senior post in Glanusk (Newport) and Miss Powell is going travelling to Australia! We have 3 new teachers starting in Sept with Miss McGiveron in Year 6, Miss White in Year 5 and Miss Deakin in Year 1. Mrs Barton is also moving on to follow her heart working with ALN pupils, and is moving down the road to Crownbridge. We are currently advertising for a new LSA so, if interested, go to the school webpage and follow the ‘About our School’ ‘Vacancies’ tabs. We wish all our leavers the very best in their new jobs and thank them for their fantastic energy, commitment and expertise over the years!! You will be missed.
All the best – enjoy the Summer!

Title: Phased rollout of Primary Free School Meals for the youngest children from September 2022 onwards.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
From the new Autumn term onwards all Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children will be offered Free School Meals. This is an important step in reaching the shared ambition of ensuring no child goes hungry while in school.
In response to the current rising cost-of-living, Welsh Government and Torfaen County Borough Council are committed to implementing this scheme quickly and would ask for your patience as we build catering capacity to ensure a successful phased implementation and work towards a whole school roll-out over the next three years.
Torfaen County Borough Council are working with the Welsh Government to develop a process for you to be able to request a free meal for your child/children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from September, trying to avoid any unnecessary burden for you. Further information will follow by the end of term.
Please rest assured that if your child is currently in receipt of free school meals and/or any other associated benefits, these will not be affected.
Kind regards

2DN parent consultations
Thu 07 Jul 2022Dear parent / carer,
As you should be aware, we have had to delay the parent consultations with this class due to Miss DiNunzio’s absence during this year.
Next week we will run two slightly different events and you can choose which suits your purposes better, or come to both:
- Next Tuesday (12th July) after school (from 3:30 – 4:30) Miss DiNunzio and Mrs Roynon will be in school and available for an informal chat with you. This will also be an opportunity to look at your child’s books.
- Next Wednesday (13th July) from 9:00 – 3:30 Miss DiNunzio will be available for a 10 minute consultation. This will either be in person or by telephone. If you would like to book a slot, please contact the office on the school number below or email the office on katherine.rowlands@torfaen.gov.uk.
If neither of the above is convenient, let me know and we will see what we can do to accommodate you.
All the best,
Simon Bates
