Update 06.12.22
Tue 06 Dec 2022Dear parent / carer,
Please note the following:
- As you are no doubt aware from the National news, there has been a worrying increase in scarlet fever and invasive streptococcal disease across the UK. More information from health can be found here about signs and symptoms if you are at all conncerned:
NHS 111 Wales - Health A-Z : Scarlet fever
We have been asked to inform health if we have two or more cases here, so keep us informed.
- Christmas jumper day is on Thursday (8th Dec) – anything vaguely festive is fine (don’t go spending unnecessarily – Santa hat, bit of tinsel etc!). Whilst the day is organised by Save the Children…
https://www.savethechildren.org.uk/christmas-jumper-day/about
(link above if you would like to donate), we have decided to support our own community as we are fully aware that many of you are struggling financially at the moment. As such, if you would like to and are able to, we are collecting for the Croesy Food Hub (bank) on Woodland Road. The normal items please – dried food, cereals, tea, coffee tins etc. As a staff, we are also collecting items that are more festive (biscuits, chocolates etc) for the Food Hub – this is an option for you if you would like to. Thanks to Mrs Clark (RR class) for organising this and galvanising us into action!
- Edlogan Way Active Travel Scheme. We are supporting this initiative and have managed to become involved through Year 6 with a view to improving the safety of the road in front of the site and having some free bike racks (we’ve managed to extend the scheme around onto North Road and up to, and including, the path that goes up the right side of the site (looking up the hill)). The issues of parking on the zig-zags / pavement, location of crossing / bus stop etc are ones that I’m sure you would want to help resolve. Also, we’re looking to become fitter and healthier through active travel and help the environment at the same time. If you support all of this, perhaps you could spend 2 minutes filling in the survey below? Thanks!

Update 23.11.22
Wed 23 Nov 2022Flu jabs have been undertaken today but the health team have run out of time and will come back tomorrow (Thur 23rd) to do Year 6. Anyone that was away today will be picked up in a mop up session in a few weeks’ time.
World Cup! As you may have noticed, the World Cup is underway and Wales are playing Iran on Friday in school time (10:00am kick off). I will certainly be donning my red football shirt and bucket hat to support my adopted country and, if your child would like to, they too can dress in something appropriately Welsh to help cheer on the team. We will be live streaming the match for any children interested (and staff!).
All the best,
Simon Bates

update 09.11.22
Wed 09 Nov 2022Dear parent / carer,
Please note the following:
Flu jabs
Please see below the electronic link from the School Nursing Service for consenting to this year’s intranasal flu vaccination for your child planned for 23/11/2022.
Please click on the link to see the information and submit your form by 12 midday on the last working day prior to the session. Thank you.
Should you require a paper consent form, please contact your child’s school or your school nurse.
Please avoid your children bringing in any food containing nuts – we have several children with severe nut allergies and we want to avoid any emergencies! Thank you.
Parking / drop off outside school. Once again, please respect the rules of the road and have consideration for the safety of everyone when driving to school. Vehicles should not go on the pavement at all and there should be no stopping on the zig-zags. We’ve had several close calls recently and, again, we would like to avoid any emergencies. Please be considerate and, if at all possible, leave your car at home.
Relief midday meals supervisors – we sometimes struggle for cover at lunchtime. Would you be interested in doing an occasional day’s work (12:30 – 1:30) to help out? Let me know.
Individual and sibling photographs are being taken tomorrow and Friday – you may wish to drag a comb through your child’s hair!! If you would like a family photo (with other family members not in school) contact Mrs Hughes in the office: kirsty.hughes@torfaen.gov.uk
Food share – you absolutely smashed it again! See below:
All the best,
Simon Bates

As a school, we are once again delighted to support the Royal British Legion with their Poppy Appeal and, with your help, raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
If you would like to support this year’s Poppy Appeal, please send cash in with your child and they will be able to make their donation and pick an item which will be available to buy from tomorrow (poppies, zip pull, wristband, poppy reflector and the very popular slap-band!).
All donations gratefully received with a suggested minimum donation of £1 for a Poppy and slap-band and 50p for all other items.
Regards,

Update 18.10.2022
Tue 18 Oct 2022Dear parent carer,
Please note the following:
- Individual / sibling school photographs
- Individual and sibling school photographs will be taken on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th November.
- All children will have their photograph taken on their own either on Thursday or Friday, and also with any siblings that attend our school during the school day.
- The photographer will be available after school on both days should you wish to include younger or older siblings that are not in our school. If you would like to have this type of picture taken, please email Mrs Hughes on kirsty.hughes@torfaen.gov.uk with your preferred day and approximate time.
- Images should be ready for Christmas.
- Harvest
As part of our Harvest celebrations, children are invited to bring in selected food items which will then be donated to the Woodland Road Food Share (bank). We hope this will give our pupils a real opportunity to share our Harvest Festival with those in the community who may be struggling at the moment.
The Food Share are desperately in need of any donations of long life food items and toiletries – shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, angel delight type desserts, instant mash, tins of custard, packets of rice (plain or savoury), tinned rice pudding, long life milk, bottles of squash, coffee, teabags etc.
Please send your donations into school week beginning Monday, 24th October (next week)
In the past we have been really impressed with the response to our appeal and so would like to thank you in advance for supporting this very worthwhile cause.
- Pantomime
Your child has the wonderful opportunity to visit The Riverside Theatre in Newport to see the professional production of the pantomime Robin Hood on Friday 9th December 2022.
Children will leave school at approximately 9.15a.m. and return to school in time for lunch.
As the trip is being subsidised by the school and PTA, the total cost per child will be £12.50, which includes a goody bag.
You will need to pay by via the Torfaen County Borough Council website. Select ‘Make a School Payment’ under popular tasks (as per school meals) and select Pantomime 2022.
We will take payment as permission for your child to attend.
- Young Carers
Is anyone that lives with you undertaking a caring role? Perhaps helping to look after you or an elderly relative or sibling? If so, we can access support for them – let me know.
- Parking
I have received a letter from the community council representing the views of local people and highlighting some of the concerns around inconsiderate and dangerous parking:
- Please don’t block drives.
- Please don’t park such that the bus can’t get through.
- Please don’t park on the pavement or mount the pavement at all – this is dangerous to pedestrians.
- Please don’t park on the zig zags – they are there to improve visibility and help keep your children safe!
- Schoop
Please remember to update your class choices etc on Schoop. If you need details of how to sign up, let me know.
All the best,
Simon Bates

Update 15.09.2022
Fri 16 Sep 2022Dear parent / carer,
I hope that you had a good Summer and that your children have settled well into school. From our perspective, we’ve had a great start – the new staff (Miss McGiveron Year 6, Miss White Year 5, Miss Deakin Year 1 and Miss Sweeting Nursery) and the new children have made a great start and we are back up and running at full speed. We have now, hopefully, put Covid behind us and can look to get parents regularly back into school. As part of this, Merit assemblies will start again from tomorrow (16.09) in the juniors and from next Friday in the infants. Arrangements as follows:
- Merit assembly Juniors – Friday at 11:15a.m.
- Merit assembly Infants – Friday at 10:15a.m.
- Parents / carers are invited to the assembly via the certificate taken home on the Thursday prior to the assembly – if you would like to come but need more notice, we can roll the merit over to another Friday. If more than one of your children get a merit on the same day and they are in different buildings (infant /junior) you can come to the one assembly and we will do both if you would like us to! Your call.
Please also note the following:
- Universal free meals for all Rec, Year 1 and 2 pupils (in September). You can sign up and pick and choose on a day by day basis. If you are interested, please register using the following
link:
- Sweets – please don’t buy sweets for your child to distribute on their birthday – we are trying to encourage the children to be healthier!! Also, whilst a treat is of course acceptable, cakes are an issue for us as we have several children with extreme allergies (really serious) and monitoring the ingredients is an issue for us. What I would encourage, however, is non school uniform for your child on their birthday! If they would like to wear their favourite dress, fancy dress or football outfit, then crack on!
Upcoming dates on the school website (link below).
All the very best,
Simon Bates

Dance-a-thon!
Tue 13 Sep 2022Croesy Dance-a-thon
On Thursday 22nd/ Friday 23rd September in the afternoon ,we are looking to hold a fundraising event as part of our partnership with Sports for Champions (Dance for a defibrillator).
As well as supporting young athletes, we hope to receive a visit from an Olympic athlete at the end of the month! Funds raised will also be put towards a defibrillator that we would like to keep in the school grounds.
Defibrillators can save the life of someone suffering a heart attack and can increasingly be found on High Streets and in public recreation areas. Our Sport’s council believe that schools should also have them and have suggested to raise funds to allow this to happen!
Please follow the link below to see the video that contains more details about the sponsored event
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f0FDtPOuPo
A big thanks already for donations received using the ‘crowdfunder’ link posted on Class Dojo a few weeks ago. Sponsor forms will come home with children shortly if cash donations are preferred.
Please note - there is NO obligation to pledge sponsor ship and no children will miss out if they are unable to collect any sponsors. J We hope to just do what we can.
Thanks for your support!
Ms Talemi

Update 19.07.22
Tue 19 Jul 2022Dear parent / carer,
I hope that you are surviving this crazy heat – we are doing our best to keep the buildings, children and staff from overheating, but we are flagging a bit! Roll on some fresher weather (tomorrow I believe).
A few points to note:
- Universal free meals for all Rec, Year 1 and 2 pupils (in September). You can sign up and pick and choose on a day by day basis. If you are interested, please register using the following link:
- Dates for next year – amended to include a year 2 performance – attached. We break up this Friday (3:15p.m – normal time) and the children are back on Tue 6th September. There has been talk of a 6th teacher training day in The Press and we have just been informed that this may well be the case, but it won’t be confirmed until January 2023. I’ll keep you posted but I think it’s very likely that there will be confirmation at this time (the minister seems committed to it). As such, you may wish to pencil in Friday 23rd June 2023 in for a long weekend as this will be the date, should it happen!
- Staffing – there will be quite a move around in September. Mr Lowe has secured an assistant head job in Kymin View / Llandogo (Monmouth), Miss Brown a senior post in Glanusk (Newport) and Miss Powell is going travelling to Australia! We have 3 new teachers starting in Sept with Miss McGiveron in Year 6, Miss White in Year 5 and Miss Deakin in Year 1. Mrs Barton is also moving on to follow her heart working with ALN pupils, and is moving down the road to Crownbridge. We are currently advertising for a new LSA so, if interested, go to the school webpage and follow the ‘About our School’ ‘Vacancies’ tabs. We wish all our leavers the very best in their new jobs and thank them for their fantastic energy, commitment and expertise over the years!! You will be missed.
All the best – enjoy the Summer!
